ON PLANETS - STICKS

Alli LindseyComment

For the past couple of years Sean Wharton, also known as On Planets, has been carefully concocting his own version of lush atmospheric tracks. Each dazzles in its space and transports the listener to a place of stillness and emotion. His latest single “Sticks” perfectly executes on his elegant yet moody indie electronic style, while demonstrating his growth on his year hiatus. To make matters even more interesting, he tapped on his own father, Calvin Wharton, a University Creative Writing instructor and poet, to bring this track to life. Warm lingering synths dance along a muted drum pattern flattered with mallets, to create the track we know as “Sticks”. As the track builds, On Planets delivers a vocal that cuts through with its silky and sultry nature, that drawls the listener in with its grace. The song rises and falls allowing you to completely immerse and lose yourself, even if just for a couple of minutes. With such a strong return, there is no doubt that On Planets will have much more in store for 2020.

After introducing itself as a mellowed-out gem, the track builds listeners up with a speedy snare only to drop into an atmospheric soundscape. “Before You Sleep” was built around a simple guitar riff Kraft assembled on a vintage electric guitar, later synthesized into the flighty version we can float on today. A welcoming look into Tyson Kraft’s forthcoming album, this well-rounded single deserves the replay.

“You know that feeling when you’re really into someone, and you’re alone at night thinking, wow I wish I could be next to that person right now. Holding them and appreciating every waking moment that you’ve spent with them. That was basically the feeling I wanted to capture in this song.It was especially tricky because this was someone who was my friend, and there was a real and serious question-what would happen if I told this person how I really felt?” -Tyson Kraft
