Independent artists who do it all are becoming more common in today’s new music business. Los Angeles songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Tim Atlas, who makes groovy indie pop tunes with seemingly timeless melodies, is helping to define that fiercely self-sufficient ethos. He’s even gone so far to book his own full US and European tours.
Last week, Atlas released his second EP, entitled All Talk! It’s a collection of 5 songs, including previously released singles “Dive”, “Unwind”, and the 11-million-stream 2016 single “Compromised”—in addition to intro and outro sketches which help bookend the body of work into a cohesive story. Sonically, the project displays a juxtaposition of analog and digital sounds, with Atlas citing influences from Hall & Oates to Tame Impala to Toro y Moi.
One of the new singles, “Figure A” is a standout track and a great example of Atlas’ nostalgic sensibilities. 80’s-style synthesizers and a slow and steady groove set the scene for vintage west coast vibes galore. Lyrically, it’s seems to be a sort of self-discovery tale, about “figuring it out.” Listen to All Talk! for yourself to discover why this independent artist is making big waves across the industry.
Catch Tim Atlas live in Austin at SXSW or in LA at School Night on April 30, more info here.
