NEW VIDEO: ATLAS GENIUS - SYMPTOMS

Erin MaherComment

I am back in LA today - but man.....what a great weekend I had in San Francisco!  I was able to catch this band at Popscene on Thursday night and they were awesome!  Atlas Genius are from Adelaide, Australia and are dominating this new music industry.   They have signed with Warner Bros. Records, which released its debut EP, Through The Glass, on June 12. The three-song collection includes Atlas Genius' breakout hit "Trojans," which had sold more than 45,000 downloads in the U.S. alone before the band was even signed. The song now sits at  #17 and rising on the BDS Alternative Radio charts with all kinds of momentum. Atlas Geinus' full-length debut, which is slated for release in early 2013.

Their new video for "Symptions" is great!  Looks like they are going to be playing with LA darlings Silversun Pickups in September......I will be checking out one of those dates for sure!

NEW VIDEO: RIOUX - HALO

Erin MaherComment

Brooklyn-based producer Rioux premieres his wild-and-out psychedelia induced video for "Halo."  The video was constructed with found footage and interpolated with images of Rioux.  From director Mike Sidow: "The imagery is inspired by the overall vibe and energy of the song itself. It was edited in much the same way Rioux's music is constructed: sampling, cutting up, distorting, and piecing together ephemeral clips and meaningful images into a final result".  It accompanies the second single off his Come On All You Ghosts EP self-released this past July.

NEW MUSIC: FUTURE ISLANDS - TOMORROW

Erin MaherComment

Since 2008’s ‘Wave Like Home’ debut album on Upset The Rhythm, Future Islands have gone from strength to strength, writing two classic albums of romantic yet melancholic synthpop for Thrill Jockey as well as exhaustively touring Europe and America to frenzied devotion. This new 7” on Upset The Rhythm ‘Tomorrow’ / ‘The Fountain’ sees the band at the top of their game, releasing some of their most compelling and sophisticated songs yet, building on the aching themes and poignant focus of their last album ‘On The Water’.

‘Tomorrow’ is a soulful swoon, its light tread is mesmerising amongst the slow burning synth cycles and relaxed bass progress. Samuel T. Herring’s ever-impressive vocal has never sounded more akin to Sam Cooke as he smoothly laments “I’m saying sorry every time we talk” before careening into a flight of sustained, arguably uncontrollable emotion. Some choice, additional vocals from Jenn Wasner (of Wye Oak), Lexie Mountain and Elena Johnston only make the song seem more impassioned; its ardent nature perfectly rendered into melody.

‘The Fountain’ meanwhile is a luscious narrative sunk into a slow dance. It’s a song that tells a tale of courtship, heady rush and leaps of faith. It’s a beautifully descriptive lyric, full of “shady groves”, “hanging gardens” and “human loam”, nodding a head to both Genet and Rilke as it passes. “I know my lines, and there’s a lot less space and a little bit of time… I know the way – It’s fine” sings Herring tenderly. Gerrit Welmers keyboard work here is stunning, the blooming chords and fluted air soaring across a landscape of crushed cymbals and quivering ambience, peaking with William Cashion’s deeply expressive, echoing bass ascent.

NEW VIDEO: MILLIONYOUNG - YOUTHLESS

Erin MaherComment

Millionyoung (a.k.a. Mike Diaz) revealed his video "Youthless" from the album Amanecer.  The video, directed by Juan Camilo Gonzalez, is described as "The spellbinding video for "Youthless" reminds us that if you want to learn to skateboard you can't be afraid of eating some dirt." Earlier this summer, Millionyoung released three brand new songs on the album  Amanecer, while he's preparing the finishing touches for his upcoming, still untitled album, which will be released in Fall 2012.

NEW MUSIC: CHAD VALLEY - FALL 4 U (FEAT GLASSER)

Erin MaherComment

One of the best parts of SXSW 2012 was, hands down, the time my crew and I spent with our new friend Chad Valley.  He closed out day 2 of my Sea Now! showcase with a great dance party - and another one of his projects called Jonquil also played the Sea Now! showcase.  His new record Young Hunger will be out on October 30 via Cascine.  The LP will feature appearances by Twin Shadow, Active Child, El Perro Del Mar, and Glasser's Cameron Mesirow, who lends her vocals to this first single "Fall 4 U."

NEW VIDEO: YESYOU - FRIVOLOUS LIFE (FEAT MARCUS AZON)

Erin MaherComment

Good morning NorCal - it is so amazing to be in the bay area where it is not one million degrees outside!  I love you LA - but sometimes you can be way too hot!  Speaking of hot - this new dance pop band out of Australia called YesYou is starting to become part of my regular playlist!  Australia produces the best dance pop in the world in my opinion, and maybe YesYou will be the next big thing down under.  Check out their new video for "Frivolous Life!"
