What a nice surprise it was last night at The Satellite - a secret show from hometown favorites NO!  I am usually at The Satellite on Monday nights - it's residency night and most of the time I like the residency bands - but this month I am just going to hang out with my friends and drink vodka!  Earlier in the night I had seen NO walking down the street and heading into a Del Taco - I was driving so I was not able to stop and say hello - but as I was telling a friend at the club about seeing NO - they walked into the back bar and told us they were playing a secret show at midnight!  Hooray!!

NO has been a huge LA buzz band this year - I was lucky enough to attend their first live show ever, and then they played my SXSW showcase in Austin last March - they are sweet amazing guys and I am happy to call them my friends.  Best part about this secret show - they played all new songs that have never been played live before.  Now......I liked this band before, but after hearing some of the new songs last night - I am STOKED for what is about to come!  I have a feeling their debut record is going to be amazing!  The second 1/2 of the set I would look over at my friend and both of our jaws would drop over what we were hearing!  The new songs have stepped it up a notch - they are the kind of songs that deserve to be played in stadiums and amphitheaters!  The band is solid and sound unbelievable!  It was a great way to round off an otherwise dull night!

If you are in LA - NO will be playing Monday August 20 @ The Echo as part of the Wildcat! Wildcat! residency.  It's free - so get yourself out to that show!

ALT-J @ THE ECHO - LOS ANGELES, CA - 08.01.12

I had been counting down the days for this show.  Once in a while I am super super excited to see a band to the point where I feel like I am 10 years old at a New Kids On The Block concert (I did this)!  Alt-J played at The Echo last night to a over sold out crowd.  I don't think I have seen The Echo that packed for a minute, and of course the band was stoked!

There is just nothing like Alt-J anywhere.  I mean it!!  Who else makes amazing alt-pop that draws on poignant folk with synth hip-hop syncopations topped off with tight vocal harmonies??  No one, that's who!  They come from Leeds, UK and I am pretty sure they are going to take over the US indie music scene in the matter of minutes.  The show was so good, I almost got into my car this morning and drove to SF for the Popscene show tonight!  I really should have.......

The set was great - when they played popular song "Fitzpleasure" the crowd went nuts and were singing along.....not bad for a band who has nothing released in the US.  My personal favorite was "Taro" - man what a great song.  I want to thank The Echo for hooking me up with a ticket - I would go solo to a Alt-J show any time, and to Daniel for the drink!

ST. LUCIA @ THE ECHO - LOS ANGELES, CA - 07.24.12

Perfection.

First of all I would like to thank The Echo for hooking me up with free tickets to this sold out St. Lucia show - you guys are amazing!  Second - whoa ......St. Lucia was amazing!  I have been hearing the chatter over social networking sites and blogs about this band, and loving the St. Lucia EP that came out earlier this year - I was really excited to see if the live show was up to par!

Not disappointed at all!!  Jean-Philip Grobler has an amazing voice and the whole band has great stage presence.  There is nothing I hate more that looking forward to seeing a band because their record is great, and then their live show is a snooze fest!

"We Got It Wrong" had a big reaction being the single and having that awesome video to go along.  However, the last song - I think it's called "September" - was fucking amazing!!  I was in the back of the room by the bar because it was so packed I could not get anywhere else (not even to the girls room) - and I found myself actually dancing with a huge smile on my face!  I would totally recommend catching a show.....I will be back for more!

Check out that "September" song from a show at Piaons in New York in the video below - so so so so good!!
