I love videos where it takes you through my town! This video is awesome! Death Cab for Cutie teamed up with Shepard Fairey and Nicholas Harmer to make this! I love love love it - video and song and art and all! Just last week I saw Mr. Fairey working late at night in my downtown neighborhood - and he can be seen all over the east side of LA! Delicious!
Doors at 8:30pm. show starts at 9pm sharp! FREE!!!
The Bixby Knolls are old friends of mine - 1/2 the band used to be in The Pacific - who I used to manage years back. I love thies guys, they are great live and are total angels. It's free, it's a residency, and it's at The Echo - all of which means it will be a fun night in Los Angeles! Go!
Another great band to come out of London - a group of teenagers called The Savage Nomads. This extreamly talented band takes their name from a notorious street gang from The Bronx that formed in the late 1960's. They are heavily supported by Mick Jones from The Calsh, and have been getting some incredible press as of late! They have a new album coming out on May 16th - and I am suggesting you get it! This band does not play by the rules, and they are good at it. It is music that is interesting and different than so much of the same drab we hear over and over. Thees kids have it - for sure!
You don't have to tell me I am 5 months behind - but hey I am a busy girl....and yes I did listen to the new Cage The Elephant album when it came out on January, but I put it aside until today. My buddy was going on and on about it yesterday, so today it was time to put on the headphones and really listen.
I was an early Cage The Elephant fan - and remember when the KCRW's of the world and specialty radio started playing Ain't No Rest For The Wicked and it made me very happy to hear this awesome band start to break. A buddy of mine from London was kind enough to send me a bunch of 7' from this band which only came out in the UK, and when I was spinning quite a bit at Spaceland, I would play them all the time, and each time I did someone would aske me who the band was, and I would reply - the best band around!
Now here we are 3 years later and they are HUGE - which also makes me happy! Thank You Happy Birthday is great - I love the way this band can mix funk and indie rock and hard rock and the blues and punk and pop....making it so enjoyable for everyone. Live - forget about it, this band is off the charts, which for me personally, means everything! I will miss the days when I could see this band in small clubs, but alas....it happens!
B I G S L E E P just released a second video for their song Sex! They are from Manchester, UK and they are being talked about like they are the best new band to come out of England....even though they have not released a single yet! Their last video for Ghost which was released earlier this year has over 85 thousand views...impressive. Their songs are pretty pop perfection - not too many suprises here but really enjoyable to listen to - sometimes the simple ones are spot on. Am I impressed - yes, but am I in love - no. Let's see what happens when we get an album and a live show.
Recently I had the pleasure of having The Gay Blades play my SXSW showcase! It was a very busy Friday at SXSW, and I actually added the band last minute when another fell through, and I have to say it was the best thing to happen....ever! They are delicious!!
When James Dean Wells AKA Clark Westfield and Quinn English AKA Puppy Mills showed up and found me in the back alley behind the venue, they brought with them all the positive and happy energy that I really needed at that moment! Once The Gay Blades showed up, the party that night really began!
It was a family affair, with Saint Motel, The Californian and She Wants Revenge all playing right around the time The Gay Blades were - and all of a sudden we were drinking, laughing and making new friends - and having a blast! I love The Gay Blades, and they will now and always be part of my musical family! I hear rumors of a west coast tour later this year.....rad!
Here are a few remixes from The Gay Blades for this Remix Wednesday!
It's still happening - Judgement Day is coming and the end of the world will be here before you know it! This only menas one thing - you have to get your tickets - HERE - or you will miss out on the end of the world!
For the month of May - Alberta Cross has blessed us here in LA with a Tuesday night residency at The Satellite ! Awesome! I know where I am going to be for the next 4 Tuesdays!
Also, opening tonight is a great band from Los Angeles called Blue Blood! I cought a show of theirs at SXSW, and believe me it was great - so get there early and stay all night! Happy hour @ midnight with 1/2 price drinks - what a way to spend your Tuesday night!!
Being a huge fan of Colour Revolt, I was stoked to learn of frontman Jesse Coppenbarger's plans to release a new solo album under the name El Obo. Album is due out May 10 - and from what I have heard so far, we are in for a real treat!
Outside of his main band duties, Jesse Coppenbarger writes other music that doesn't quite match the scheme of Colour Revolt. These songs have a life all their own and cast Jesse and his many talents in a different light. Entitled El Obo, this new solo/side project gives these songs an outlet and allows Jesse to venture into new unchartered territories. With the assistance of former Fletcher bandmate Steven Bevilaqua to fill in gaps/holes and pull the sound together, El Obo's aesthetic swings from dark, brooding mood folk to lush pop balladry with suprising ease.
Although we hate to pigeonhole, words like "pensive", "intimate" and "reflective" come to mind when pondering El Obo material. Jesse's country home digs in the Oxford, MS backwoods have apparently taken toll on the stripped bare arrangements which comprise the early demos. With piano and acoustic guitar taking the forefront, El Obo evokes beauty and speaks great volumes through hushed sound...
