It's the new year! I am recovered from a fun night of live music and drinking with great friends - waiting for everyone to get back to work so I can get back to work! New Years resolution was to eat vegan for at least one year - so I had my Tom Kha soup with tofu and no fish sauce and brown rice. Delicious! Car is still dead but I will get around to calling AAA sometime tonight, and my blog list for work is pretty much updated for the new year! I'm ready to go!
Hooray For Earth just posted this remix of "True Loves" by Cereal Spiller along with a cool video. Hooray For Earth was one of my top 5 new bands for 2011 - and I really like this remix. It came out on the True Loves EP early last year...so enjoy!!
Today is just a great day for discovering cool music! Here is another great dance band out of New York called Ghost Beach! Only a few months old, they've already perfected a retro-future aesthetic that sounds like the holy trifecta of The Police, Depeche Mode, and Daft Punk, with a little Passion Pit sprinkled on top for good measure. Josh plays the jilted lover with vocal panache as Eric's soaring synths, guitars and forever young harmonies are plucked right out of Neverland. Enjoy!
Biggest band of the year to break out of Los Angeles, and possibly the world. It was just this past February that they had their LA residency at The Echo - and then like a day after they blew the fuck up! They blew up so big that commercial radio had a field day and we heard "Pumped Up Kicks" every half hour. Now it's the end of the year and they are headlining festivals and getting over $100,000 (probibly more) per show! Lucky...lucky guys!
Foster The People may be a dirty word in Los Angeles - and we may be sick of them already - but the remixes coming out are really really good! I give Foster The People credit to having a great sound that is origional, and they put on a pretty good show - and they translate into dance music perfectly! ESTAW put out a remix of "Miss You" last month that I have on quite a few playlists - and it has a fancy little video to go along! Enjoy!
It is not very often that you will see a post about an R&B artist. I mean - top 40 R&B is some of the biggest piece of shit out there! Auto tune sucks - I hate everything where auto tune is over used, and that seems to be the big trend. What that means is that anyone can be an R&B singer as long as you look good and can preform on stage. Bullshit!!
Today, however, I decided to download the new album from The Weeknd called "Echoes of Silence" - and I am super impressed. The Weeknd's real name is Abel Tesfaye and he hails from Toronto, Canada and he is getting all sorts of press with this album. It is a different kind of R&B album, it's dark and slow...almost erie and gothic. I feel like I am listening to dark industrial music with funky beats! The deeper I get into the album the more I like it! Well done sir!!
AUSTRALIA!!! Jesus....can the music coming out of that country be any better? Over 1/2 my posts these days are about Australian bands, and each time I come across a new one I fall in love all over again! I think I should just listen to Australian bands because there's shit coming out of LA, and Brooklyn is tired...but Australia is on fire!!
Grafton Primary is from Sydney and I stumbled upon them late last night while I was working on some art. There last album came out a few years back, but it looks like they have something new in the mix and we should be hearing new tunes very shortly. Their sound mixes crunchy distorted indie dance rock with 80s goodness...lots of keys and the vocals mirror Peter Murphy.....love it!!
Really looking forward to some new music from Grafton Primary - and I hope to see them in the states soon!
This one goes out to my British boyfriend whom I miss very much and I hope is New Years in London will be as fun as my New Years in Los Angeles!
Now New Years is a "Holiday" I can get behind. I think I like all holidays that really should not be holidays - like Halloween - but for New Years Americans actually get off work! Awesome! And there are bottles and bottles of champagne to be consumed - which is always a bonus because it's my most favorite alochalic beverage. And you can actually start your life over - quit somking, diet, exercise, no more blow - things of that nature.
The last night of the year does have its downfalls - it is one of the amateur drinking nights - so I am not too excited to have to deal with all the douche bags that will be wondering around LA binge drinking and touching my hair, or asking my name 10 times, breathing alcohol breath in my face, telling me how blue my eyes are, or that I have nice teath, or that I should hula hoop......this happens!

Personally - I hate Christmas! The music, the fake festive spirit, the over spending on crap we don't need. For me, it's just about family - and I have a small one...just Mom, Dad and brother...but I am lucky to even have that - and they rule. So I am not going to send you any Christmas cheer or buy you a gift...you can call me the grench bitches...now effing dance!!!
Is Tropical has gifted us with a new mixtape, and it is starting my Christmas morning off perfectly!! You can even download it for free! Thanks Is Tropical!!

I saw many many shows this year, and so many of them were so good, and so many were not so good! Here are the top 5 favorite shows of 2011 - for one reason or another - like they blew me away or I just had the best time ever! Enjoy!
#5: Patrick Watson w/ Malajibe, The Barr Brothers, & The Besnard Lakes - September 21 @ El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles, CA
#4: She Wants Revenge w/ The Californian, The Hundred Days, & One AM Radio - June 20 @ The Satellite - Los Angeles, CA
#3: Gotye (First US show ever!) - October 18 @ The Satellite - Los Angeles, CA
#2: Foo Fighters - February 8 @ Spaceland - Los Angeles, CA
#1: Art Vs Science - August 21 @ The Fortune Sound Club - Vancouver, BC, Canada
This was a big year of discovery for me - I saw more shows and listened to more new music than I think I ever have in my life...or something like that! For the following 5 artists, I could have been first to know or behind the ball, but they are all new to me as of this year! Great shit!! Enjoy!
