Ok this was was a must today. I had the ultimate pleasure of seeing Mako's first ever live show last night, and damn Alex and Logan absolutely crushed it! So a little backstory, the guys have undergone a transformation over the last year moving from their dance heavy roots into a full indie pop soiree that is ready to take on the world! Their new live show has strings, guitars, keys and drums with Alex's vocals leading the way. I've also had the pleasure of hearing their upcoming Hourglass LP due out next Friday December 9th, which is also amazing and is currently available for pre-order here. Let's tap into "Let Go Of The Wheel," this final single from the LP might just be the best of the album. The tune starts warm and relaxed with an uplifting arp and pads filling out the instrumental behind Alex's first verse. As the guitars slide in leading us into the pre-chorus, the track explodes into massively uplifting chorus, full of cascading melodies of vocal ooh's, and layers of sound full of sun soaked strings, pads and a punchy snare/clap. "Let Go Of The Wheel" is a beautiful exposé of their new sound, poised to keep us warm and in high spirits as we launch into the Christmas season.
Indie Pop
SIVIK - ALL DAY ALL NIGHT
Music, Original MixCommentLA based electro pop songwriter Sivik has been steadily putting out some really fantastic genre bending electronic music, and I'm absolutely in love with his latest tasty tune "All Day All Night." His silky smooth vocals float above the mellow instrumental with crispy percussion, and an infectious plucky lead synth. The chorus vox chops tinge with an electronic filter that's adds a robotic quality to it, but in no way does it feel stiff and unmusical. On the contrary, it's this magical blend of electronic choppiness and lyricism that separates this tune from the plethora of other electro pop jams. We've been told this is the lead single from his upcoming EP 'Solstice' and is just a dose of the epicness awaiting us in his next release. You can purchase this single on iTunes here.
MONOPHONA - FOLSOM PRISON BLUES
Music, CoverCommentMany music legends like Ray Charles and Elvis Costello have covered famous songs from Johnny Cash with their own unique sound and the results have been nothing short of spectacular. Here comes Monophona, dare to be extreme and cover the song that solidified the Man in Black to epic badassery when he played this song in the actual Folsom Prison back in 1968. This “Folsom Prison Blues Cover” keeps the dark aura of the song by producing its own dark sound with the guitar and bass. The continuous riff that is being played by the guitar keeps the essence of a rhythm and blues and gets you swaying the way Johnny Cash had people moving back in the day. The vocals match the vibe perfectly as she is singing with such soft yet dark range that reverberates due to her channeling the spirit of Johnny Cash himself. Monophona are breaking new ground and will continue to break new ground because they are that talented and just that badass. Monophona dares to be extreme, dares to go above and beyond, and dares to use the darkness and let the music naturally blossom into epic wonders. Check out the new 8th wonder of the world, Monophona’s “Folsom Prison Blues."
LIONE - LEAVE THIS PLACE
Original Mix, MusicCommentLIONE has risen from relative obscurity to prominence so quickly that Martin Garrix's new label STMPD RCRDS has taken notice and chosen him to be their first solo act signee. It's easy to see why with amazing tunes like his "Where Are U Now" and "Bodyache" remixes that have drawn all sorts of comparisons to Porter Robinson (not too shabby). It's been a minute since a new release, but I'm super excited to share his latest and first original "Leave This Place". What's not to like about this tune? Luscious synths, bright and endearing melodies, infectious arps and beautiful vocals, the record has an endearing quality to it that invokes a smile at every snare. With a live show, a guest mix on Garrix's Beats 1 radio show and his first original now under his belt, it's clear we have a some major movement here. Beautiful Buzzz has been a supporter from the beginning, and it's awesome to see things moving in the right direction so quickly. You can get this as a free download from STMPD RCRDS here.
FREDDY SPACER - WHERE'S UR MIND
Music, Original MixCommentLet us introduce you to a far out new indie rock act Freddy Spacer. This is a new project for Freddy who formally made waves in the industry with his old band Y Luv. I definitely loved everything Y Luv put out, so I wanted to show some love to his latest "Where's Ur Mind." Produced by another BB friend Blair, the tune is a driving indie rock cut that is fueled by cosmic breakdowns and falsettos leading to a soaring "La La LA" reverby bridge. His live show is a visual spectacle with dancers, visuals and lights accompanying the band. You definitely want to check that out so catch his next show 11/15 at the Resident in downtown LA more details here.
JULIA KNIGHT - GHOST OF YOU (ZACHESER REMIX)
Music, RemixCommentDC producer zacheser transforms Julia Knight's "Ghost of You" by shifting away from its original, brooding cadence and into a slightly more upbeat indie remix. As the track slowly builds it draws you in with a funky bass line behind Julia Knight's entrancing vocals; all before slamming into a crescendo synth breakdown that serves as the grand finale. zacheser's profound respect for the legacies of Disco and House music all come through strongly in a remix that will have you wishing you were somewhere driving along a coastline with the top down, taking in the last fleeting moments of summer. Check out more of his indie house tracks here.
GOLDEN COAST - COMEBACK KID
Music, Original MixCommentI've gotta take a second here and throw some more love over to one of the best upstart indie pop acts around right now Golden Coast. Their last single "Recess" was just a joy to listen to (check out our review here), but today they've struck gold again (pun intended ; D) with their new single "Comeback Kid." Their music is so wavy and beach friendly, and the guitar lines just put a real upbeat vibe to the tune. The chorus lyric "Comback...Comback kiiiiddd" just soars with fluent harmonies creating an infectious lyric that you'll be singing for weeks to follow. Tack another great single onto their quickly growing catalogue. We knew it was coming eventually, but we're now hearing rumors that their debut EP will be coming in November! Great news for us, until then enjoy this awesome new single.
XYLØ - DEAD END LOVE
Music, Original MixCommentHappy hump day! I'm gonna start things off with this awesome new single from XYLØ. The Duddy's are simply getting it done giving us some really great radio friendly tunes, and "Dead End Love" is no exception. The track has a mysterious, but pensive angle to it like much of their other songs. The darker lyricism teams up with the solemn soundscape of the instrumental creating a terrifically moody tune, "If we drive right off a cliff, we can live dead end love forever," Paige sings casting a shadow over the tune. However there's enough ear candy in her melodies, and the vox chop sound in the chorus lightens things up just enough to let this track shine. Add another great song to their growing catalogue. You can purchase on iTunes here and stream the single on Spotify here.
KING DECO - READ MY LIPS
Music, Original MixCommentWell it hasn't taken very long for Jordanian born King Deco to be making all sorts of moves. Her newest single "Read My Lips" has already been getting quite a bit of buzz and certainly for a reason. Her infectious vocals pair perfectly with the upbeat pop production encapsulating the instrumental. I waited until today to post this record because I thought it would be perfect for that weekend vibe. The sun soaked single uses a groovin' bass line, sporadic guitar and dreamy electronics to create a synthpop anthem worthy of every pre-game playlist. Ohh and you can download this new single for free right here.
